Dr. Orlena Kerek joins me on my newest podcast episode to tell me and the listeners all about rebooting your health and wellness. We focus on the 4 pillars of wellness that she has identified – nutrition, exercise, sleep, and emotional wellness, and how you can make adjustments in these areas in our lives and even get our kids on board. She also breaks down an experience of mine to explain how our emotional wellness can spiral downwards but also how we can consciously create a spiral upwards into positivity again.

Key Quotes from the Episode:

From the age of 40 onwards, we lose muscle mass. Osteoporosis starts now and we need to start doing exercise so we’re fit and have muscle tone and bone strength so we don’t put ourselves in danger in the future, start looking into the answers to questions like “what muscles do deadlifts work” and you’ll start seeing results a lot faster.

“When you talk about negativity, it makes sense that our brains are geared to protect us. It’s about danger. Our brains are basically this mechanism of survival. But the good news is that once you’re aware of it, there are loads of things you can do by just being aware of it and create positive thoughts and generate positive emotion.”

“Ask yourself if something is the truth. We love to fantasize, we love to create all of these different what ifs and these negative thoughts and negative fantasies and we believe it. Check in with yourself. Ask yourself, ‘Is this the truth right now? Right now, what is the actual truth of what you’re going through?’”

Dr. Orlena trained as a pediatric doctor in the UK. In 2011 she moved to Spain with her husband and 2 young kids. To cut a long story short, she “accidentally lost” her medical career and turned to the internet to keep herself busy (initially as an outlet from parenting.) She started off helping parents of picky eaters teach their children healthy eating habits. The loss of her career (and self identity) combined with parenting 4 young children (twins came along in 2012) led to an inner emotional turmoil. When she looked at herself, she didn’t see the happy joyous mother she aspired to be. When her husband became unwell, she realised that they both needed to prioritise self care. In the last few years, she has pivoted to teaching mothers to lead a healthy life (including weight loss where appropriate) so they can feel fit and fabulous. The 4 pillars of self care that she teaches are nutrition, exercise, sleep and emotional wellness. She draws from her own experiences (still walking the trenches of parenting!) as well as the latest scientific research and thinking.
